We are a small hobby kennel that started out in 1991. We own and operate our own Licensed Boarding Kennel and teach obedience, agility and hunt training classes locally under the name of Shadowland Kennels Obedience Classes and Boarding. We are members of the Des Moines Obedience Training Club (DMOTC), Mahaska County Humane Society, The Labrador Retriever Club, Inc., SRHRA & NAHRA.
Dedicated to the multi-purpose Labrador Retriever, we strive to produce dogs sound in body and mind. Our goal is to to maintain genetic soundness, temperament, working ability and intelligence while producing labs that meet the standard for the breed. We feel strongly about doing our part in the ongoing struggle with pet overpopulation. We sell pet puppies on limited registration and a spay/neuter contract. Our responsibility is lifelong and we will take a dog back at any age if the owners are ever unable to keep the dog. We like to stay in contact with our puppy buyers and watch our puppies grow and learn in their new homes.
Our breeding dogs are OFA clear on hips and elbows and CERF clear on eyes. Each of our dogs are worked in some arena of performance including hunting, obedience, agility, tracking and therapy work. We have had the unfortunate opportunity to learn about the ramifications of Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) first hand. While this has been a difficult learning experience, it has allowed us to gain some knowledge about CHD and we would like to share it with you. It has also made us very aware that, as breeders, we must do our best to prevent Hip Dysplasia from occuring. At 5-6 weeks, we begin teaching a 'Sit' & 'wait' command before feeding. Promise's puppies are 7 weeks in this photo and have the command down solid.....except for one sit. : -)

Indigo earned her first Started Retriever Leg in September at the tender age of seven months! She didn't pass the second day, but was able to run the rest of the test and the judges were very impressed! They even mentioned her at the ribbon ceremony! This is one talented little girl and we can't wait to see how far and how fast she can go!
At the age of 8 months, Indigo also passed her first AKC Junior Hunter Test AND her Working Certificate Test at the 2006 Labrador Retriever National.
She finished her Junior title in June & Started title this fall of 07. Fall of 08 she finished her Hunting Retriever Title with great style. Now off to work on Senior and Intermediate!
