We are a small hobby kennel that started out in 1991. We own and operate our own Licensed Boarding Kennel and teach obedience, agility and hunt training classes locally under the name of Shadowland Kennels Obedience Classes and Boarding. We are members of the Des Moines Obedience Training Club (DMOTC), Mahaska County Humane Society, The Labrador Retriever Club, Inc., SRHRA & NAHRA.
Dedicated to the multi-purpose Labrador Retriever, we strive to produce dogs sound in body and mind. Our goal is to to maintain genetic soundness, temperament, working ability and intelligence while producing labradors that meet the standard for the breed. We feel strongly about doing our part in the ongoing struggle with pet overpopulation. We sell companion puppies on limited registration and a spay/neuter contract. Our responsibility is lifelong and we will take a dog back at any age if the owners are ever unable to keep the dog. We like to stay in contact with our puppy buyers and watch our puppies grow and learn in their new homes.
If you have an interest in breeding or would be interested in co-owning a puppy, at a reduced cost, that would stay a potential part of our breeding program with terms that are agreeable to both parties, please let us know. We are particularly interested in homes that may be interested in hunt tests or showing with their dogs.
Our breeding dogs are OFA clear on hips and elbows and CERF clear on eyes. Each of our dogs are worked in some arena of performance including hunting, obedience, agility, tracking and therapy work. We have had the unfortunate opportunity to learn about the ramifications of Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) first hand. While this has been a difficult learning experience, it has allowed us to gain some knowledge about CHD and we would like to share it with you. It has also made us very aware that, as breeders, we must do our best to prevent Hip Dysplasia from occuring. You can also read our story about Cody, who had a total hip replacement in January of 1999. From there, you can check out the actual x-rays (this page takes a while to load) of Cody's hips before and after the surgery.
Screening for CHD is only a small part of the dedication we have to striving toward a sound dog. While they are living creatures and we can't prevent all problems from occuring, we sincerely do our best to not pass on genetic problems to future generations.
If you are interested in an older puppy or young adult that may become available, or if you are interested in co-ownership, you may fill out a questionniare that we can keep on file in case something becomes available.

This is River's last litter. She has been a terrific producer for us and this litter should be no exception. We expect great looking pups with ability, intelligence, temperament and soundness that will help take us to the next generation with River's progeny. Mason brings more talent, drive and type to the table and we are really looking forward to this litter.

At 5-6 weeks, we begin teaching a 'Sit' & 'wait' command before feeding. Promise's puppies are 7 weeks in this photo and have the command down solid.....except for one sit. : -)
